Col. Furey reporting for duty! I have lots of puppy intel for you. First of all - I am pretty much an expert service-dog-in-training (according to me). I know all the basics (sit, stand, down, touch), PLUS I’m pretty good at some new skills. I can do “paws up” and then “push” to open doors that have accessibility buttons. Drop your keys? No problem! I can pick them up for you. I can also bring you my leash, find my place, and brace. Best of all? I am a HUGE fan of doing “paws up” onto your lap. It counts as “work” but mostly I am in it for the snuggles and snacks.
I’ve been having lots of fun hanging out with other Hero Dogs buddies. Hero Dogs Ernie goes to the same PhD school as me- so we get to have lots of playdates. I’m even more excited about Hero Dogs Bobby’s new placement. He was matched with my raiser Kelsey’s sister! They are in team training now. That means he comes to visit a lot and we have a grand time. We especially like playing tug-a-war with toys. (But who doesn’t?!)
It isn’t all puppy play time- I’ve been having some great adventures with my puppy raisers. I have been to two Nationals games this summer! I LOVE them. Go Nats! The stadium is really exciting, but I play it cool. I ignore the snacks on the ground (no peanuts for me!), and just chill out at my raisers’ feet. During my first game, we sat wayyy up high. I got a teeny, tiny bit nervous when we first went up the stairs. Then I remembered that 1) I’m a pro and 2) there will be snacks. For our next game, a really nice Hero Dogs sponsor gave me some tickets that had lots of extra dog legroom and didn’t require stairs. I liked that even better!
All in all, I’m living it up while I prep for the next big thing- advanced training! I still have a few months left with my raisers, so I’m enjoying every minute of it. I love following them around and snuggling with my cat-bro Samuel (he gives me kisses now!). Until then, I am going to keep learning so I can be the best service dog ever for my veteran.
