We’re in the midst of National Service Dog Month and it’s also National Dog Week! You know who’s a great dog to celebrate? This week’s #FeatureFriday, service dog Hero Dogs York! 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞/𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲/𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝: SGT Alvin C. York, but York for short/16 December 2011/Golden Retriever aka America’s favorite breed
𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫: She served 14 1/2 years in the Marine Corps before being medically retired. She always talks about the good old days during her tour of duty as a Drill Instructor at MCRD Parris Island, SC. She told me if she was my Drill Instructor she’d take me to the sand pit (sounds like a trip to the beach), conditioning hikes over several miles (ooh I love long walks), and the infamous confidence course (I’m a master on the agility course).
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫: Poking my Veteran with my nose when I notice her anxiety and PTSD. This gets her to focus all her attention on little old me to shower me with praise and yummy treats.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐱 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈’𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: I’m either napping in every corner in my house, going on walks through the neighborhood with my bestie beagle gal, or wrestling with my little brother.
𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐠: Being part of a huge pack (or family as you humans would say). From my puppy raiser pack, to advanced training pack, and now my pack with my veteran, it just continues to grow and grow and grow.
𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐠: Sometimes people can’t read my vest that states “Do not pet”. I do not like to be touched while I’m on the job because it distracts me from any cues my Veteran might be projecting.
𝐀 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐤 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬: Every time I see my puppy raiser mama, I get extremely excited. She has to come give me some good scratches and tell me what a good boy I am to calm me back down.
