On this day in history—May 15th, 1942—President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the creation of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, allowing the first women other than nurses to serve within the ranks of the United States Army.
Today, we’re proud to highlight Hero Dogs Franklin D. Roosevelt—service dog to U.S. Army veteran Angelee.
𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞/𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲/𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝: Hero Dogs Franklin / 12-16-11 / Golden Retriever
𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫: Angelee served in the Army, where she liked playing in the mud almost as much as I do. She served as a Military Intelligence officer (predicting bad-guy moves), which means I need to be smart and predict what she’s going to do next—even when she doesn’t know it yet!
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫: Bringing her shoes. Sometimes this earns me a walk! Bringing my food dispenser so she can fill it up! Picking up my leash when she drops it—that usually gets me a treat. Reminding her to stop and look at me whenever she does those weird things she does.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐱 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈’𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: Running through the woods on hyperspeed and jumping through muddy creeks. Hanging out in the kitchen where ice or food may fall. Playing with my dog pals in the field especially my brother Hero Dogs York (but that hasn’t happened in a LOOONG time)!
𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐠: Being able to be by my partner’s side all the time… I get lonely when she’s not around. Also, I really like learning new things, going new places, and being around people who might sneak me a snack or an ear scratch.
𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐠: ALWAYS paying attention to my partner. Ignoring other dogs. Not getting enough snacks because I gotta stay slim.
𝐀 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐤 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬: I love to roll in things—grass, snow, mud—you name it. Fishing for sticks then rolling on them is fun!
