I started out the month at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). This visit was extra special because it was St. Francis of Assisi day! That is a day when some people celebrate a man who loved animals and did good things for humans and animals. To celebrate, WRNMMC held a “Blessing of the Animals” ceremony. The Franciscan Friars came and many of the Red Cross therapy dogs and Walter Reed facility dogs came too! The Friars said some great things about animals and then they came around and blessed each of us dogs individually as well, and we received a giant bag of treats! I like this blessing thing if it means food! It was great to see all the humans who help us dogs do our jobs in assisting other humans in the hospital. They all believe that we have a great healing power that medicine just can’t provide. Have you had your dose of furry love lately?
I have had many great visits at WRNMMC this month. I spent a lot of time with kids and I had a very special visit with a patient whose family came from very far away. I wanted to let you know that I feel like we make a big difference whenever we visit. We often get surprised by who we will meet or how we can help them. Sometimes we are on our way to a different area to visit or on our potty break when we meet someone who needs a visit. I am always happy to help, of course. If the people we visit with can pet me, then I will stand or sit next to them so they can, or if their bed is up too high I show them my tricks. I just love it! Of course the only time I get distracted is when a pretty chocolate Lab is around. I don’t know what it is about Lili, but OH MY! I can’t keep my eyes/nose off of her. So Christen has been working very hard to teach me how to not focus on Lili. I am a young guy so sometimes I just can’t help this magnetic pull I feel towards the pretty ladies in my life!
The next week we Hero Dogs therapy dogs had our quarterly meeting. We discussed where we have been visiting, our new locations, and what skills we need to work on. I learned a new trick where I “Salute” and I practice every day! Christen said maybe we practice it too often, because one day the humans were sitting on the couch and I walked over to them and saluted them. They cracked up laughing… I’m not sure why because they have been asking me to salute so often I thought it would be an appropriate time. I also learned a new practical skill where I “hold” a cup or spoon in my mouth and then the human I am helping reaches out to drop either a treat or an object in my cup. I learned that pretty fast and I quite enjoy it! This is just one of the many skills I am learning that will help me in Animal Assisted Therapy.
Later that week we also had the big Hero Dogs quarterly meeting. I got caught up on a bunch of information as well as met the new puppy raisers.
We got pumpkins this month! Christen asked me what I wanted on a pumpkin and I said that I wanted to eat it, so she got a baking pumpkin for me! I get canned pumpkin in my Kongs everyday, but fresh pumpkin is sooo much better! Christen and Brendan are silly… they didn’t eat their pumpkins. They just carved funny faces into them.
I was LabraTHOR dog of thunder for Halloween this year! A fun fact about me is that I was bred/created during Hurricane Sandy, and my littermate/sister is named Stormy, so being the dog of thunder seems like it fits me well! I did a little photoshoot as LabraTHOR and I held my hammer for almost five minutes straight! My humans were impressed! Kids walked by and saw me, exclaiming “look, a dog in a cape!”
I wore my costume to the Hero Dogs Halloween party; Christen dressed up as Iron Man and Brendan was Captain America, of course! I liked doing “Touch” with Iron Man’s hand which has a light up button inside! The Howl-a-ween party was a lot of fun. There were three Superman/Supergirl dogs, a minion, a Jack-O-Lantern, a skeleton, an Olympian, Snoopy, the Red Baron, Captain America, and many more!
Throughout the month my humans have been filming for my upcoming music video and it has been a lot of fun! I can’t give away too much, but I think you will like it!
This month is also always a busy photo month. To see more photos check out my Flickr album!
Next month is Turkey month! Anything with Turkey, count me in! Turkey and pumpkin – mmm mmm mmm!
