Hi everybody! It’s me, Chester Nez! March has been quite an exciting month for me. At the beginning of March, I went to stay with fellow puppy raiser Suzanne because Robin went away on vacation. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about this, but after 10 minutes I was a happy Lab. Right away I noticed that I had work to do. Suzanne was missing her buddy Hero Dogs “Boomer” who she had just sent off to K-9 College, so I made her come outside and play ball with me, and then I sat on the floor with her while we watched some TV. I am very good at comforting and was glad to help.
Since then we have been very busy!! Every day I am going out to busy places. I am a regular on the blue line metro and am familiar with the workers at the Crystal City stop. They see me and say “HEY, CHESTER!!” and I wag my tail. Now that the metro is no big deal, I go to places like the Eastern Market and the Gallery Place. What I love most about Eastern Market is that they have grass-fed beef, which I have gotten as a high-reward treat during the week. Steak is just really great; I love it. I have made friends with the Starbucks baristas, too. When they heard that I was Hero Dogs Boomer’s little brother, they all said “awwwwwwwww!”
I have been practicing putting things into the grocery cart and putting socks into the washer and dryer, but I have to say these aren’t my favorite tasks. I am getting better at these sorts of chores, though, so that is good.
Another thing I have done: I have mastered walking and sitting on glass floors and elevators!! When I first saw the glass floor and elevator, I didn’t realize that there was a glass floor. I just thought I was being asked to walk off a cliff, which I would never do. Then Suzanne walked onto the glass floor. At fist I thought she was walking on air, and I thought WOW. Then she happened to have grass-fed beef nuggets on hand to encourage me to follow her, which I did, because, steak. Who wouldn’t attempt walking on air for steak? Anyway, once I did it, I realized I was not falling and was walking on glass!! It was such an amazing experience and I was very proud of myself. Now glass floors and glass elevators are no big deal, just like the metro is no big deal.
Want to hear another funny surface story? When I saw shiny black tile at a mall, I was scared at first. It was very reflective, it turns out, so when I saw my handsome self in the reflection of the shiny black tile, I thought that there was another dog that looked JUST like me inside the tile. Turns out there is only one dog as handsome as me, and that’s me. I am happy to say I am no longer worried about shiny black tile.
I have also been exploring Old Town, Alexandria. What a place! I went on a historical tour and heard stories of things that happened a long time ago. Supposedly the tour was a “haunted” tour but I didn’t see any ghosts. Other times in Old Town I have seen lots of other interesting things like ducks that quack a lot and a man who plays songs on glasses filled with water. I sat and listened to all of the songs he played for us, and I really seemed to like a song by a guy named Mozart.
I have met a lot of Veterans in Old Town, too. Once, we spotted a Native American statue, and since I am named after Navajo code talker Chester Nez, I thought why not get a picture with the statue? I met a Veteran there, too, who was so excited to see me that he posed in my picture at the statue with me.
I have also done a lot of shopping this month and am a great shopper, it turns out. I like people-watching and walking at a nice slow pace so we don’t miss any good bargains. I also went to the National Zoo and off to the movies– both times with a bunch of my Hero Dogs friends!! After the National Zoo field trip we all went down to where the food trucks are and had a picnic. At the movies, we all did a great job of staying down on our portable places, and I did not howl when the wolves in the movie did– I just sat and listened like I was supposed to do.
Wow oh wow, what a month, huh?! It sure was fun, and I am so excited about what is coming up next month– one thing I’ll be doing in April involves going to a place where there are hot dogs and flying balls. Can you guess where I am going?! I will tell you all about it after I actually go next month!!
