The summer has been moving right along and I’ve been busy enjoying it. Remember last month I told you that I didn’t much like the pool? Well, how things change. My Hero Dog friend Amber came for a visit and we spent all day running and playing in the pool. She showed me how good it feels to cool off in the water on these hot summer days. Now I love swimming after a ball and floating on the raft.
I’ve been experiencing all kinds of new and exciting things. I went golfing with Petra and her friend one day. It was a little scary riding in the golf cart at first, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. I sat in the cart and watched while Petra hit balls. She was very proud of me. That was good practice for the Hero Dogs Golf Tournament, which was a big success. All of us Hero Dogs and the many wonderful volunteers that help us were there, and I got to hang out at one of the holes and greet all the golfers. They were all happy to see me there and to learn about the good work Hero Dogs is doing.
One weekend we went to the mountain cabin in the woods. It’s always fun to go to new places. We went for long walks and I got to splash in a stream and help collect firewood. There were lots of family there and I got loads of love and attention. I got to go to a “slumber party” and ride in a kayak, and Tracy showed me how to take my first “selfie.”
In addition to going on a long car ride, getting a ride in a kayak and then in a golf cart, I also sat on a cow’s lap, rolled on a moving cart, and took the Metro for the first time. Petra and I rode on the Metro to Washington, DC. I had to settle and wait while Petra figured out how to buy a ticket. The Metro wasn’t too crowded, and I laid under the seat and watched the doors open and close and watched people come and go. Nobody even knew I was there. Petra also introduced me to her bicycle… she rode it around the court and I just followed along… no big deal!
I guess you think that my life is just all fun and games. Well, I do my share of training and learning as well. We go to class every week and I work on new commands. I’ve been working on “back” and “paws up” and “paws off.” I like the paws up and off thing, but I’m still having trouble understanding what “back” means. When we are at the grocery store I walk very nicely behind the cart and peer through the underside of the cart. We’re working a lot on walking without pulling, and keeping my nose off the ground… where all the good smells are! I’m always following Petra around the house; I help her carry things and I help with the laundry. I’m really good at pulling things, and I can now even pull open the sliding glass door.
Well, I think I’ve filled you in on all of my summer adventures. I’m going to get my leash and tell Petra it’s time for a walk and then a swim…
