In late May, I graduated from my last puppy class, so in June I started attending real service dog classes at Hero Dogs. It’s more advanced than puppy class and I’m enjoying it! Sometimes I find the tasks hard – it’s challenging to lay down and stay there as my puppy raiser walks around me. Other times the tasks are easy – walking across a see-saw, running through a tunnel, or picking up strange objects and handing them to people. During one class, we went to the fire station where I met a fireman, and we went to the park where I learned the joys of a slide and tire swing. Sometimes school is easy.
The next week, I got to go to “school” with my puppy raiser and meet her 4th and 5th grade class. That, my friends, is insanity. I couldn’t find the playground. Everyone wanted to pet me. I even got to go to a band rehearsal, where the kids are learning to play their instruments.
Now that June is over, school is out for my puppy raisers which means plenty of walks, swims, and jaunts in the woods. I found my first two ticks – well, they found me, but I’m not keeping score – and they were easily removed before they got too much of my sweetness. I found joy in finding toads, bugs, and deer. I could get used to this summer stuff.
I’ve talked in the past about my father (Vince – Kerrybrook). I saw photos of my mother (Brigan – Seachange Labradors) and noticed how she’s got my great color. In June, I got to participate in the Father’s Day Rose Ceremony at The Wall.
Thousands of roses are donated and stacked on the Vietnam Memorial. I tried to help, but they didn’t want me to take the roses off their vials. They also didn’t want me to chew on the cards. There are so many fun things to try as a puppy! Finally I got it right, just in time for some great photos.
So, the biggest news of June, at least in my mind, was that I finally made it in the social media world. I not only can be found on my blog, but now on Twitter (@MitchtheDog) and Instagram (@HeroDogMitch). I have plenty of friends of the four and two-legged varieties. Please keep up with me there as well as on my puppy blog.
From the feeling in the air in the last few days of June, July is gonna be a hot one. I’m headed on vacation so you’ll get to see me in my swimsuit, shades, and relaxing. Until then, keep your tail up and your nose down.
