Hero Dogs Maverick – A Day in the Life of a Service Dog

June 30, 2013 By blog-editor

Hullo friends!

It is hard to believe that I have been partnered with my veteran for 2 whole months already. My life now is so different from what it was when I was in ‘college’ at Hero Dogs. I thought I would tell you what a typical day is like post-college.

Hero Dogs "Maverick"I get to sleep later on most days, though I admit I would prefer if it was even later — hee hee. Sorry, but I love my bed and hate to leave it. Once I am up and have refreshed myself, I have breakfast. When that is over, I take my bowl (or my Kongs) to the kitchen and put them in the sink. I do this because bending over first thing in the morning is not a safe thing for my partner to do. (I am thoughtful that way 🙂 ). Then I help my partner get our stuff together and I gear up, and out we go into the world. Sometimes we walk to wherever we are going, but sometimes we use buses and trains. I went to the National Zoo. I really liked the Meerkats. I go somewhere almost every day, helping my partner out and meeting new people.

When we are at home I help tidy up the house by putting things away and helping with laundry. Sometimes my partner gets so caught up in what she is doing she loses track of time. I have found that grabbing a poop bag and presenting it to her gets her attention in a hurry.

Did I tell you about my hedgehog? Ms. Jennifer got him for me as a reward for being so good. He grunts when I squeeze him and I like him a whole lot. My cat doesn’t understand why I love my hedgehog so much and lick it when I won’t do that to him. I keep trying to explain to him that my hedgehog doesn’t shed fur like he does. Let me tell you that a mouthful of cat fur is nasty. I don’t mind playing tag or ball or chase the ribbon with him, though. Just no licking. But speaking of my hedgehog, I will tell you a funny thing that happened. I was playing with my partner in the house, and she was tussling with my hedgehog with me and then she laid down on the floor. Well! When I see my partner go prone on the ground I am trained to do one thing, and so of course I stopped playing right away and laid down next to her. She was all confused and it took her a while to figure out why I didn’t want to play any more. We had a good laugh about it later.

Hero Dogs "Maverick"Almost every evening after dinner I get to play with my new friends at our playground. We play chase, and king of the A-Frame. I usually win that game, though my friend Benny gives me a run for my money. After it gets dark I get to watch TV for a while. I curl up with my partner and we snuggle as we watch. We go out for a walk before bedtime and when we come in, off comes my gear (collar included), and I get brushed and a massage. Then it’s time to brush my teeth and clean my ears. Sometimes, if Benny has drooled on me a lot I also get my face and paws washed. Then I hear my second most favorite word… BED!! (My first favorite word is FOOD.) Have I mentioned how much I love my bed?

Here’s a list of ‘firsts’ for me: Saw my first lion. (He yawned at me.) Had a Meerkat encounter. (They loved me.) Passed my CGC (Canine Good Citizen). First Hero Dogs Open House with my partner. (It was so great seeing all my old kennel friends who took care of me while I lived there.)

That’s all for now. Take care and thanks for reading!
