Destiny in the form of an anonymous donor brought me to Hero Dogs, but as soon as I arrived, I knew this was my calling. As the “founding dog,” I paved the way for all the puppies who came after me. They look up to me when they watch me working with the Veterans in training, patiently teaching the Veterans their new vocabulary and skills. Both the puppies and the Veterans are amazed when they watch me retrieve a dime from the floor, turn on a light switch, put clothes in the dryer, unzip a zipper and help the Veteran remove a jacket, or get a bottle of water from the refrigerator. I show the puppies how to lead the Veteran to a timer going off in the kitchen when they cannot hear, steady their partner going up or down stairs, assist their partner in rising from a fall, or go and bring another person to the Veteran’s aid. I love my job! Not only do I train Veterans at Hero Dogs, but I travel the region to educate audiences everywhere about the important work that I and other service dogs like me do to bring our Veterans freedom and independence. I am a Hero Dog.
