Hi everyone! I have been so busy practicing my skills and learning new things at college, and of course interacting with people and playing and socializing with other Hero Dogs. My friend Radar reminded me that I should let everyone know how I’m doing, so here is my update!
During the past few months I have been working on perfecting skills that I already know: push, pull, turning lights on and off, paws up (on all kinds of surfaces), and walking up stairs one at a time. These skills will be very helpful when my future partner and I begin working together. I have also been learning new skills that will be very useful for my future partner! I have been learning commands such as ‘heel’ and ‘side.’ My new favorite task is ‘keys, find it’ where I am able to find lost keys in the training room!
In June, I attended the Wagging Tails Open House where I greeted many other dogs, and I also had so much fun at the Hero Dogs Open House with all of my puppy friends. I was recovering from a small foot injury but I had a great time even though I had a cute bandage on my foot. Later, In August, I had a great time at the Hero Dogs Golf Tournament, where my friend Rosie and I enjoyed a little girl socialization time.
Speaking of Rosie, I am excited to have so many friends living with me in the Hero Dogs kennel! My favorite golden retriever roommate is Rosie, because after all girls have to stick together. When all three goldens get a little crazy during playtime, I sometimes prefer to play with Grant and Radar, or go back to my own kennel, because I am just too mature for such young puppy play. I am becoming a mature service dog in training, after all.
I have also continued to go out to new and familiar public places. I am getting more experience with the mall, grocery stores, Home Depot, pet stores, restaurants, and the Rio. Some of these outings are especially for more advanced Hero Dogs in training, like me, and I feel that I am becoming more prepared to confidently and calmly handle anything that comes my way!
Recently I have gone on outings to places in Baltimore! I checked out a statue of a story called “Puss in Boots” but I’m not sure why the story is about a cat instead of a dog. That’s okay — I love cats, especially our new kennel kitten Betsy!
Well, I should get back to work (and play). Soon I will let you know of my upcoming adventures!
