Chester Nez here to share about what I did this past May. It was a great month. It was my last month out and about before coming to K9 College!!
Let me tell you some of what I did this past May first. Out and about on my usual walks, I saw some unusual findings while exploring. I found a nest with Robin eggs in it, I saw a fox run right past me, and I saw a family of deer. I looked for a very long time at all of these sightings (except the fox– he was fast) and did not bark at any of them. Nature. It’s beautiful!
As usual I spent a lot of time in Old Town, Alexandria. There are always so many interesting people there and they come from all over the world. Everyone always wants to pet me and say hello, but I generally just ignore them all unless given the OK to say hello. This doesn’t happen very often because I am practicing my very important work. On the couple of occasions I do interact with the people, they are always so impressed to hear and see what I can do and what my purpose is in life.
One of the best things I did was go to the Baltimore Children’s Museum!! Oh my dog– there is SO much to do and see at this place, both for children and service dogs in training like myself. Hero Dogs Clara Barton came too and we practiced lots of our skills. Every exhibit had something to push, pull, press, step on, smell, feel, look at, or watch. Plus there were so many different kinds of people for me to practice ignoring and once in a while say hello to. Remember, I was with Hero Dogs Clara and she is still just a little baby dog and needs to practice interaction. I just happened to be there and so I got to say hello to some folks, too. I paid for my friend Suzanne’s souvenir magnet at the register and then we headed home.
Oh– how could I forget that before going to the museum we stopped at Miss Shirley’s in Baltimore for brunch?! If you have not been to Miss Shirley’s– go, go, go. I didn’t taste any of the food myself but it smelled delicious, and the staff at Miss Shirley’s was extremely welcoming to Hero Dogs Clara and me.
Before heading off to K9 College, I said ‘see you later’ to all of my friends at all of my favorite stores. They gave me hugs but no kisses because I do not care for kisses, and wished me good luck. I spent extra time cuddling with my favorite toy, Moosey-Moose.
Since arriving at K9 College, so far so good!! I like my dog friends and the staff is great, and the volunteers are all so nice. Basically, I am never alone and am always busy with something or another, either training or being a goofball in the office. Suzanne comes and visits me, and I have visits with Moosey then.
That’s pretty much it for May!! What a great month!!
