Well, February has been another fun and exciting month! As I wished, there was even more snow that I played in with my buddy Lincoln. I also went for a few hikes during the snowstorms. My favorite thing about snow, though, is catching snowballs. If I don’t catch the snowball it disappears somewhere in the snow and I like to search for it until Margaret throws me another one.
Besides playing in the snow, I went to many places to practice my skills. I went to the movie theater three times this month. After lots of practice, I’ve finally learned that I am not allowed to eat the popcorn on the floor. Sometimes I stare at it, but Margaret reminds me to “leave-it” and then I get an extra-yummy snack for looking at her!
At the grocery store, I’m working on staying behind the cart and ignoring the people who walk by us. If someone looks in our direction I get wiggly and want to say hi. Most of the time Margaret tells me to leave it and we move on… but sometimes she has me sit and I “say hello” by placing my head into someone’s hand. I also made a few trips out shopping for clothes and new furniture. Margaret got new bedroom furniture, including a new mattress. Mattress shopping was extra boring because Margaret laid on lots of mattresses. She said I was a very good boy because I settled next to each mattress before we moved to another one.
I went to a few restaurants this month where I practiced “under” while Margaret enjoyed dinner. One day, Margaret and I went out to lunch with some of her friends from high school. They were all very excited that Margaret brought me along. During lunch they kept taking pictures and videos of me because they had never been out with a service dog. After lunch, the waiter saw us leave and asked where I came from. Margaret explained I had been under the table the whole time. He was very impressed and even though I was a little bummed he didn’t notice me, Margaret told me to take it as a compliment.
One evening I attended Margaret’s sister’s school book fair, which was run by Margaret’s mom. There were kids from elementary through high school and I loved meeting all of them! I showed them skills I’ve been working on and I got a few extra belly rubs (my favorite)! There was another service dog there and Margaret was very pleased with me. I saw the dog across the room and once Margaret told me to ”leave-it,” I stayed settled at her feet and didn’t cry or pull to say hi to the dog. I must have done really well because Margaret and I were asked to come back and give a demonstration about Hero Dogs to the school!
This month I also stayed with Morgan and Jean again for a few days. I enjoy staying with them because they take me to the agricultural park in the mornings to play fetch with my green ball and then we work on my skills. They said, since the last time I stayed with them, I’ve started mastering some of my more advanced skills like, “pull,” “push,” “hold,” and “paws-up.” I’m one smart puppy!
At the end of the month, Margaret received a call from Jennifer. My puppy raisers, Laura and Louis, do not think they will have enough time to give me all the training I need to be a service dog, since they just had a baby. So now Margaret has become my new official puppy raiser. I’m happy to be living with Margaret, but I’ll miss Laura and Louis. I hope they come to Hero Dogs sometime so I can give them a big kiss!!
