Hero Dogs Grete
Grete is an eighteen-month-old female (spayed) black Labrador retriever. She is very petite, weighing only about 46 pounds. Grete has been in our service dog training program since she was a puppy, and also tried her nose at detection work. Grete does not have the confidence necessary to become a service dog. She is fearful of young children (elementary school age and younger). We are seeking an adoptive home for Grete. Grete is very smart and absolutely loves to work. Our ideal placement for Grete would be a home with a Veteran, first responder, or immediate family member with a disability who could utilize Grete’s training and abilities as a skilled companion IN THE HOME only.
As a skilled home companion, Grete could assist with most physical tasks (e.g., retrieving, opening and closing doors, aiding with undressing, etc.). She has not learned any specific alerts (e.g., to sounds, anxiety cues, a name call, etc.) but is a quick learner and could be taught to alert very easily. However, Grete is not physically large enough to aid with mobility.
Grete is a young, healthy, and VERY active dog who requires substantial daily exercise. Fortunately, playing ball is her favorite thing in the world so this is relatively easy to accomplish. Grete does best when her mind and body are kept occupied. Grete gets along with other animals, but prefers the company of and bonds strongly to “her” person. Grete has good house manners, and, if properly exercised, can settle quite calmly indoors.
Requirements to adopt Grete:
- A fenced yard (NOT invisible/electric fence)
- No young children (elementary school or younger)
- Not left home alone all day
- Additional training commitment if placed as a skilled home companion
Our highest priority is finding the most suitable adoptive home for Grete, with adopters who are willing and able to meet Grete’s physical, exercise, mental, and emotional needs and are financially able to care for her. Preference will be given to a Veteran adopter. The adoption donation for Grete is $750. The donation will be waived for a Veteran adopter with an honorable discharge. If you are interested in adopting Grete, please read the Hero Dogs FAQs and then fill out a released dog application. If we feel that you are a potential candidate, you will be contacted to arrange an interview and home visit. Because of the requirement for a home visit and follow-up training, potential adopters must live within approximately one hour of zip code 20833.
