What a fun summer! Hero Dogs Joe, Hero Dogs Annie, and I met at the Field most weekends to run and play. But the summer wasn’t all fun and games; I had to work, too. Seems that after a wonderful, care-free vacation, I had to get back to working on “appropriate behaviors.” Alison and I spent far too much time walking in stores where I had to heel and side and couldn’t sniff the thousands of fascinating smells found on the ground. Sometimes I could sneak in a sniff because as a “labra-hound” it is instinctive for me to read the smells. It’s funny to me that I often find no other doggy smells in the places I go with Steve and Alison.
We visited Bar Louie in Rockville Town Center quite a few times for $1 burger nights on Tuesday. We usually sit outside which I love because I can watch the birds. Alison makes me LOOK so I can only watch them for a short time. I prefer staring and sometimes chasing the birds which is frowned upon.
When I wasn’t going to fascinating restaurants, shopping, or greeting my numerous fans at Caribou Coffee, I would go hang out with my neighbor, Dakota. We would run and run and run. He is older than me so we tire faster, but Dakota is much better at playing catch. Often I just miss and the ball hits me.
After running in the Field, I sometimes go and visit friends who are kennel volunteers. The kids help train me while Alison talks to their mom. I am never out of her sight so I try to behave and listen to my junior trainers. Afterwards, Alison takes me to a fun store called Pet Valu for treats and toys. I usually get to pick out my own toy. One visit I picked out a blue sheep. It is one of my favorite toys. I won’t even let Otto play with it.Guess I should be lucky that my job as a service dog doesn’t require me to catch things; I just need to TAKE and GIVE sometimes BRING and DROP. These skills help me with my chores in the house. I am now responsible for picking up clothes and helping with the laundry.
I have been practicing LEAVE IT with all types of stuff. Alison thinks she is being clever by tempting me with Oreo cookies left close to my nose. What she doesn’t understand is that I would NEVER, EVER take food off the table, but I would take the pen and bookmark. I’m no dummy. I know if I BRING her a pen, I will get a treat!
