March was a month of maturity. This month I turned 8 months old, and I feel I am beginning my transition from puppy to adolescent dog. I will always go crazy for snow!
One day, in the first part of March, I decided not to walk on the leash. I wanted nothing to do with it. I refused to “heel”, or “side”. I pulled and carried on while on my leash throughout the morning walk. That awful morning walk only bought me an afternoon walk…on the dreaded leash! Well, I still didn’t want to walk on the leash in the afternoon either. I pulled, I rolled around in the grass, I picked up sticks and tried to run, I ran in the opposite direction of which we were walking. When we got home, I had a long lesson of training. It was a painfully disobedient day for me. The next day, Friday, we were up at 5:45am and I decided that yesterday did not go so well and listening is more fun than disobeying. I had playtime in the backyard at 6:00am, some training in the morning and we were off to the mall by 9:00am. I walked so nicely on the leash! I kept focused and listened to every command. I was told “good girl, good job Maggie” and received so many praises from my puppy raiser while walking so nicely on the leash.
In March, I attended the fifth grade field trip to the Maryland Science Center, as a chaperone. Wow, and lots of children were all around me. I had so much fun walking with my group of children that I was assigned to watch. We were at the Science Center for four hours, and I did a great job on keeping an eye on the children. I listened to my puppy raiser like a champion. I was good at “down”, and waiting for long periods of time. I did the steps more times than I can count, trying to keep up with those kids. I did really well on the steps and turned an sat at the top each time.
I am getting better focusing on my puppy raiser. I watch her constantly for my next command. I “settle” well at restaurants, the gym, work meetings, and at home. I have improved on not jumping. I still jump at times, but I am much better. I am really good walking on the leash now. I love practicing my vocabulary words. I have been working on “back”, “stay”, “follow”, “turn”, “look”, “heel”, “relax”, “watch”, “wait”, “sit”, “stand”, “down”, “under”, “at ease”. I am able to stay focused while we are out and have improved greatly on my behavior out in public. I am growing into a lovely lady lab and I think I might be calming down a little.
My new things going into April…counter surfing and crawling away! We were at the bank today, so I crawled to the side of the bankers desk and “surprise” jumped up. The lady at the desk jumped,I thought it was funny, but i got the look for that one, and a reprimand. Maybe I’ll be a lady lab after April.
